All Aboard the Carnival Spirit!
Today we drove back to Anchorage from our fabulous 2 night stay at the Drifters Lodge. We stopped along the way at the town of Portage (which is not a town at all because after the tsunami that followed the 1964 earthquake, the destroyed town was never rebuilt). We stopped to visit the Wilderness Access Center which is a rehabilitation center for animals who have become separated from thier parent or their parent has been killed. They are also trying to reintroduce the Wood Bison to Alaska. We saw Elk, Caribou, Musk Ox, Moose (and the cutest baby moose), Grizzly, Bald Eagle, Great Horned Owls, Wood Bison, Porcupine and Black Bear. We also stopped in the small town of Girdwood which has a new ski lodge that looks very nice. We showed Gil and Jane downtown Anchorage before returning our rental mini-van and boarding the bus transfer to Whittier where we boarded our boat! My favorite quote from the Fodor's Guidebook, "The most charitable description of the town is that it's unlovely." Too funny! and true!
