We had a fun trip through the small town of Skagway today. The only excursion we signed up for was “The Best of Skagway,” and it certainly lived up to its name. The weather started very foggy as we took a bus up to the top of the summit into Frazier, British Columbia but cleared a bit as we came back down the mountain. We took the White Pass and Yukon Route Railroad and the views were amazing.
It was a great train ride through the Yukon along the Klondike Trail. When we came back to Skagway, we went to Liarsville, a gold mining camp from 1898 (it was called Liarsville because the press stayed there making up stories about how easy it was to hit it rich in the gold fields without ever going there themselves). At Liarsville we had a salmon bake (so good)
and a show complete with music and a humorous dramatization of a poem by Robert Service. And, of course, no trip to the Klondike would ever be complete without a little panning for gold! Our tour finished up with the famous Red Onion Brothel. The Madam herself even gave us a tour!
