As a relaxing way to wind up the program in Oxford, last Sunday I spent the day in the Cotswolds. Just above Oxford, the Cotswolds are a region of rolling hills (wolds) that form a beautiful countryside. The bus dropped us just outside the village of Upper Slaughter and we walked a little over an hour from Upper Slaughter to just beyond the village of Lower Slaughter.
England has one of the best sets of topographical maps in the world called Ordinance Maps. Plus, they have a wonderful system of public footpaths that allow the public to walk through private land as long as they are on these marked pathways.
So we walked...
But apparently Dean Leslie and several students needed cooling off at the end of the walk. Afterward, we went into the town of Stowe-on-the-Wold for lunch then headed to Broughton Castle, family home of the Fiennes Family (cousins to the actors Joseph and Ralph Fiennes) and home of Lord and Lady Saye and Sele. It is a spectacular home and garden. These few pictures speak for themselves:
