After a lecture earlier in the week on the Cult of Becket, a large group of students were excited to visit Canterbury Cathedral, the site where Becket was martyred. It is a three hour drive to Canterbury - a really long boring drive on a bus. When we arrived we had lunch and were able to see the elaborate entry gate that leads visitors into the Cathedral Courtyard:
And into the presence of the magnificent Cathedral:
Sadly, it did not lead us into most of the interior of the church. Our visit was curtailed to the nave, cloisters and crypt by a wedding taking place in the middle of the afternoon. We did not get to see the vault ceiling leading into the quire, the stained glass or any of the Becket items. I did find this awful memorial covered in human bones:
It seems really disgusting but I thought it worth a picture. I also saw the wedding party as they processed out of the church. The bride looked lovely but the bridesmaids wore the most hideous dresses. It may be vindictive but it was fitting seeing as they kept us from seeing the church.
