I'm not sure you can call a day that included a tour of Austwitz and Birkenau enjoyable so I will simply say it was an interesting and thought-provoking day in Poland for myself, Dad, Gil & Jane. We left Krakow this morning for the Concentration & Extermination Camps and had a full guided tour through the 2 facilities. As much as you read about the Holocaust, facing the place of such horrors is much more real although even still it is impossible to fully comprehend the acts which took place there.
On a lighter note, we returned to Krakow via Salt Mines in Wieliczka. The mines have been excavated since the 13th Century and only closed full operation in 2002. During the 1960s the miners carved extensive rooms, statues, ect out of salt leaving behind a phenomenal place to visit. It was truly amazing what they did underground. We went 135 meters below the surface and saw numerous carvings but also a salt lake and a huge chapel. It was an uplifting end to the day.
