Off to the battlefields
On 6 April 1917, the United States declared war. They joined the Allied forces to "make the world safe for democracy" (President Wilson). Nearly 10 million military deaths occurred in World War I. Of those, 1.1 million were from Great Britain and the Commonwealth states. This weekend, I am visiting the memorials to those who fought and died at several important sites in France and Belgium. This is the third time I will make this journey (and I wrote about the sites in some detail if you click here). When I return on Monday I will have more to share.
