It has been a great pleasure to serve as a member of the Board of Directors for the Girl Scout Council of the Southern Appalachians. I joined the board in 2009 upon the merging of three legacy councils forming one new council representing 46 counties throughout East TN, southern VA and northeastern GA. We've seen lots of changes over these years - many up, some down. Every board needs fresh energy and ideas and it is time for me to take a break from the Board (although not from Scouts!). But as I exit my position on the Board and as First Vice Chair, I wanted to leave with a positive impact; helping to move the council forward. I believe I have done that. Following the resignation of our CEO in October, I was asked to Chair a CEO Search Committee. After lots of work and many conversations as to what we needed in our next CEO, the Committee met to interview the top 5 candidates in January over the course of one weekend we did an initial round of interviews and narrowed the field to two top choices that we invited back for full day interviews including interactions with the committee in both formal and informal (meals) ways plus interactions with the senior staff and girl members. It was a very difficult decision but we are excited to announce a new CEO for GSCSA!
It’s our honor to announce that the Girl Scout Council of Southern Appalachian’s board of directors has appointed Lynne Lawson Fugate as CEO of the council. Her start of service today concludes an extensive search process completed by a board of directors committee, after receiving input from council staff, volunteers, and girl members.
“I am honored to serve in this role and look forward to working with the Council’s volunteers and staff to bring Girl Scouting, and the leadership development it provides, to many more girls throughout our region. I was a Girl Scout, and personally appreciate the positive influence Girl Scouts can have on the trajectory of a girl’s life,” said Fugate. “There’s no doubt in my mind that the world needs more girls of courage, confidence, and character who are committed to making it a better place. The mission of Girl Scouts is relevant, important, and inspiring to me.”

“Lynne’s extensive experience as a leader and member of business and community organizations, combined with her proven leadership in the private and non-profit sectors, make her an ideal fit for GSCSA and its current needs,” said Jennifer Knight, Board Chair, Girl Scout Council of the Southern Appalachians. “Our search committee was impressed with her insights, intuition, and an eagerness to connect with the people who comprise our diverse stakeholders across the council. We congratulate Lynne and look forward to GSCSA flourishing under her leadership.”

Most recently, Fugate served as Senior Vice President at SmartBank in Knoxville, TN where she was responsible for direct sales, new business development, customer service and staff management. She also coordinated charitable contributions for the Knoxville market. In addition to her extensive career in banking and finance, Fugate was Executive Director for Nine Counties. One Vision from 1999-2005. This organization was established to create a vision for the Knoxville metro area and the roadmap toward achieving it. She holds a B.S. in Business Administration from the University of Tennessee and currently serves on the Knox County Board of Education.
