We spend our second and final night in Durham and started first with the Durham Cathedral. This was my first visit and it was very interesting. The Cathedral was begun in 1093 and was built mostly in the Norman (Romanesque) style although there are additions built on through 1280 and again in the 18th century. There was no photography allowed inside but the exterior is striking in itself:
The trip back was long and we broke it up by stopping at a wonderful estate called Haddon Hall.
Haddon Hall is an example of a fortified manor house. Parts of the house date to the 12th century. It was completely refurbished in the 20th century and the magnificent terraced gardens were redone.
